Long time Susanville resident Harold Lester Abbott passed away Monday, May 23, 2011 at the age of 92. He was born on Dec. 24, 1918 in Thrall, Calif. to Frank and Fay Abbott. He and his family moved to Susanville in 1926 where he has resided except for his tour of duty in World War II and his university years.

While visiting home on furlough from the United States Army, he met his future wife Roma whom he married in 1946. They shared 60 years of marriage before her death in 2006.

He was a graduate of the Susanville Elementary School, Lassen Union High School and Lassen Junior College. He completed his university studies at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for almost four years, most of that time was spent in foreign service.

Upon his return to Susanville, he became assistant manager of the local employment service office during the year 1946 and in December of that year he was appointed Lassen County Veterans Service Officer and held that position until September 1950 when he resigned to enroll in Loyola University Law School in Los Angeles. He graduated from law school in June 1953 with a juris doctor's decree (doctor of law). He was admitted to practice law in January 1954 and returned to Susanville where he became deputy district attorney. He served as the Lassen County District Attorney for four terms. In 2004 he was honored for being a practicing attorney for 50 years.

He was also city attorney of the city of Susanville from 1961 to 1967. He was a past commander of the Thomas Tucker Post 204 of the American Legion and was a past commander of William Davidson Post 2381 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. He was also a past district commander of the Third District of the American Legion.

He is survived by his son John (Debbie); and his daughter Jane Gardner (Jim); grandchildren Amy Gardner VonSchimmelmann, Brian Gardner, Matt Gardner, Josh Abbott and Erin Abbott Messer; and great-grandchildren Ryan Gardner, Noah VonSchimmelmann, Kate VonSchimmelmann, Conner Garner, Hunter Abbot, Avalon Messer and Aurora Messer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leonard and Virgil; wife Roma; and great-grandson Christian VonSchimmelmann.

Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. May 31, 2011 at the Janesville Cemetery, Janesville, Calif.
