Darius was the son of Maj. Samuel Adams (1762-1817) and Amy Bosworth (1761-1802) and almost certainly named after his father's elder brother, Darius (1761-1778), killed at the Battle of Monmouth. Born in Sandisfield like his father, Darius would have traveled to Cayuga County with his family in 1796. Married about 1813 Esther Bradley (1788-1817), the widow of Reuben Pomeroy, and on her death at the age of 29, married second, her younger sister Lue Bradley, (or sometimes "Sue")(1798-1873) with whom he had at least seven children.

In his History of Cayuga County (1879), Elliot G. Storke records (p.492) that "Darius was eight years old when he father moved in from Massachusetts. ... His business life for over half a century as principal ... covered the period of Northville's greatest growth and prosperity, and to his energy, liberality and public enterprise is due in no small degree its present business and social status. He was succeeded in the mercantile business by his sons Samuel and Darius W..."
