Hodge Smith worked as a farm laborer and as a miner. By 1940 he owned his own farm. His father, retired, and a widower, lived with Hodge and his wife, Rosie, at the time of the 1940 U.S. Census.

He was a son of Zack Smith and Nettie Sweat. Census enumerations for 1910 and 1920 record four other siblings/half-siblings: sister Louie (b. abt 1898), Frank James (b. abt 1900), Rosa N. (b abt 1901) and Robert (b. abt 1903).

These same census reports recorded a Rebecca J./Jane as the mother of all five of Zach Smith's children. However, Tennessee Delayed Birth Records 1869-1909 recorded Hodge's mother as Nettie Sweat [Nancy Elizabeth](abt 1881-1910?), who Zack Smith married in November 1902.
