Herbert's parents were Hannah Weeks Johnson and Elijah Astle. In the 1880 census, it states that Herbert was 16 years old and a "lapidarie". His father was a lapidarie (one who deals, polishes or engraves gemstones) and I suspect that Herbert was an apprentice at that time. He did not go on in that business, however. He did start at the bottom, sweeping floors, in the restaurant supply business. He sold things like sinks and other metal appliances. As a result his kitchen at home was always state of the art. The pictures to the right are current ones of the home he built in 1895. His 1st wife died 2 yrs. later. He was a member (and possible a member of the board at one time) of the Squantum Club in E. Providence, RI.
Herb was a very generous man. He was very English in his manner (his ancestry was British) and also was not the affectionate type, according to his 3 nieces. He married Maria "May" Wheaton Seymour (his 2nd wife) September 24, 1900, they did not have any children. Herbert is buried with his parents, siblings and first wife (Delia F. Astle). His 2nd wife, May (Maria), is buried with her twin sister, Jennie Louise Seymour Gibbs, in Barrington, Rhode Island.

Herbert died from "coronary occlusion".
