Marie Sophie Hurlander married Eberhard Jurgens Hosto in Germany. They were the parents of seven children: Edward Jacob, Ernst, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Elsabein, Catharine and Fritz. On April 17, 1853, Eberhard Hosto died in Lienen, Germany. At the urging of her sister Mary Suhre and brother William Highlander, Marie Hosto (later known as Sophie) immigrated to the United States in November 1853 and settled in the Alhambra area of Madison County, Illinois.

Sophie's oldest son Edward Jacob, who immigrated in late Fall of 1854, joined his family in the Alhambra area. He was a school teacher and itinerant preacher of the gospel. He became the first pastor of the Salem Church when it was established in 1860 in Alhambra.

Sophie Marie Hosto was laid to rest in Salem Cemetery in 1891.
