Katherine Urbain was born on April 11, 1872 near Placid / Pleasant Grove, Iowa. She was the daughter of Quirin Urbain and Mary Kirby.

Katherine married James O'Brien in June of 1896 at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid, Iowa. Katherine and James had one child.

Katherine died on August 19, 1899 at her home near Placid, Iowa following an illness of three weeks duration. Katherine's husband and her ten month old daughter survived her.
