Lakeland - Gladys Louise Costine Flora, age 93, of Lakeland, FL. passed away on May 7, 2011 from heart failure.
She was born on June 14, 1917 in the community of Providence (North of Lakeland) to the late A.W. "Babe" and Della Brown Costine.
Gladys was a lifelong resident of the community. In 1936, she graduated from Kathleen High School where she was the school's first homecoming queen. She had many occupations throughout her life: homemaker, farmer, cattle rancher, Paradise Fruit, and working 17 years in the Polk County School Food Service Association. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Some of her favorite pastimes were: spending time at her North Carolina home, quilting, playing "Hand & Foot", and being hostess to her friends and family.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Delbert Flora; two sisters, Rosalee Bowen and Opal Foshee; and a foster brother, Herman Wesley "Jack" Brown.
She is survived by three daughters: Patricia (Glenn) Bridges, Faye (Charles R) Bingham, Betty (Don) Fisher - all of Lakeland, FL.; eight grandchildren: David (Tracie) Bridges, Daron (Stephanie) Bridges, Della (Arron) Hightower, Darla (Marvin) Short, Charles D. (Juanita) Bingham, Charlene (Trent) Ross, Donny (Janna) Fisher, Angela Fisher; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She leaves behind many friends and family.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at Bethel Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Bethel Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund.
