Harold E. Nestler, 85, of Parkersburg, died Jan. 13, 2003, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.He was born in Parkersburg April 18, 1917, son of the late Ernest and Lina Nestler. He graduated from Parkersburg High School, where he played football and wrestled. Following graduation, he went to work for A&P Grocery. He owned Nestler's Market, and operated it for 44 years until his retirement in 1977. He was one of the area's last independent grocery store operators and was a founding member of the Big Bird Market Grocery Cooperative. He started the river grocery service, which delivered groceries and supplies to the riverboats serving the Ohio Valley. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1212, a 50-year member of the St. Marys Masonic Lodge and member of First Lutheran Church of Parkersburg. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting.
Surviving are his daughter, Judy Treharne and her husband Dave of Parkersburg; two grandchildren, Heather R. Treharne of Parkersburg, and Heath Treharne and his wife Cindy of Davenport, Iowa; and one brother Hans Walter Nestler and his wife Norma of Silver Spring, Md.In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Helen Cooper Nestler.Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Grand Central Avenue, Vienna, with the Rev. James F. Kinsler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday and until the service Friday.Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Parkersburg.
