WESTBORO - Gladys I. (Barrows) Holmes, 94, of Westboro, formerly of Ashland, a 60-year choir member, died Wednesday shortly after arriving in MetroWest Medical Center, Framingham.
She leaves a sister, Ellen Edgar of Westboro; two daughters, Irene Brown of Southboro and Ellen Temple of Arnold, Mo.; a son, Martin Holmes of Lancaster, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, including James M. Holmes of Westboro, with whom she lived for the past 11 years; 18 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Hopedale, daughter of Frank I. and Ellen (Munger) Barrows, and lived many years in Ashland before moving here in 1968. She attended Ashland schools.
Mrs. Holmes worked at Telechron Co., Ashland, and General Electric, Ashland, for 26 years, retiring in 1968. She previously was a colorist at Wallace Nutting Studios in Framingham.
She was a 78-year member of Ashland Federated Church and a member of its choir for more than 60 years. She was a 50-year member and past noble grand of Aurelia Rebekah Lodge 50 of Ashland and past deputy of Massachusetts Rebekah Assembly. She was a past master and 75-year member of Ashland Grange 124, Massachusetts State Grange and National Grange.
She was a member of Busy Monday group at the Westboro Senior Center. She enjoyed music, travel, bell collecting, and knitting and crocheting afghans. She enjoyed birds and flower gardens.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Federated Church of Ashland, 118 Main St., Ashland. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Ashland. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St., Ashland. Contributions may be made to Federated Church of Ashland, Gladys I.
