Nancy Merriah Simmons was the daughter of John Schenck Simmons, who was born in Ohio in 1817, and Nancy Rusher, born in Kentucky in 1816.

Nancy married George Carey Arnold September 1, 1880 in Lamar County, Texas. During their marriage they had seven known children:
