William was son of William and Anna Narramore Braman. William married Harriet Stancliff in Erie County, New York in 1843. They had six children.

Enlisted on 23 January 1864 at Berrien Springs, Berrien County, Michigan at 46 years of age for a 3-year term; mustered in on 25 February 1864, Company I, 12th Michigan Infantry Regiment as a Private; died of disease (chronic alcoholism) in a Regimental Hospital at Little Rock, Arkansas.
