Services were held for 108-year-old Josie Fernau England on Friday, June 10, at First United Church in Sioux Rapids. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven was in charge of arrangements. Josie M. Fernau England was born April 6, 1903, in Glencoe, Okla. She graduated from Swaledale High School and attended the Des Moines University, receiving her nursing degree from Kewanee Hospital 1927. On June 1, 1928, Josie was united in marriage to Dwight W. Fernau. Josie was employed as a Registered Nurse at the Toledo Children's School and also at the Fort Dodge and Mason City Hospitals. Josie and Dwight owned and operated the Sioux Rapids Hospital for 24 years. Josie was the nurse at Camp Foster and also at Longhouse Nursing Home in Spencer. On Nov. 29, 1975, Josie was married to John England. Josie passed away May 31, 2011, at the Ruthven Community Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; four brothers; five sisters; a son-in-law; and a grandson. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Brugman (Wayne) of Sun City West, Ariz., Evelyn Smith (Don) of Spencer, and Helene Quillin of Sun City West, Ariz.; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
