Ernest was born in Colbourn WI to John and Myrtle Jones Barton. His father died in the Spanish American War when Ernest was two years of age. When he was about 7, his mother was married to Fred Severson. He lived in WI until he was about 16 when the family moved to Vancouver WA.

He became an employee of the Seattle Portland & Spokane Railroad (SP&S) in 1923, working for them until his death.

On June 23, 1928 Ernest married Betty Enright. They had one daughter.

On January 31, 1954, he was the engineer of a train that derailed due to a landslide. The locomotive plunged into the Deschutes River killing him and one other. Th body was recovered 19 days later after the engine had been dragged into quieter waters.

Ernest was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was laid to rest on Feb. 22, 1954 at the age of 49 years old.
