They moved to Oakland where Bill bought a Gilmore gas station on the corner of 14th and 22nd Street. He also worked for the Rio Grande Oil Company. During WWII Bill went to work as a rigger at Moore's shipyard in Richmond for 85 cents and hour. Later he built tanks and cracking towers at refineries for $1.65 an hour. Bill helped install penstocks at the Pitt River dam in Northern, CA then returned to the shipyards. He broke his back which ended his steel work.
