He married first Bernice Yancey, daughter of Ivan Yancey and Hattie Sears, a friend of his sister.

Bill was the water boy when crewman were laying out the town of Tennant in CA. He worked for the telephone company where he was paid extra for playing on the company baseball team. He also liked to bowl and golf. Bill soloed in a plane for thr first time on 11 Feb 1929 and had a limited pilots license, number 5927. At that same time Bill's parents were running the Marshall House in Klamath falls, which they owned. Bill returned there and found Bernice working for his parents, they were married 23 Aug 1930. They moved to Oakland where Bill bought a Gilmore gas station on the corner of 14th and 22nd Street. He also worked for the Rio Grande Oil Company. During WWII Bill went to work as a rigger at Moore's shipyard in Richmond for 85 cents and hour. Later he built tanks and cracking towers at refineries for $1.65 an hour. Bill helped install penstocks at the Pitt River dam in Northern, CA then returned to the shipyards. He broke his back which ended his steel work.
