U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1845, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Framingham, Massachusetts, in 1847. He served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1857-58) was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1867 and was appointed assessor of internal revenue by President Lincoln, serving (1862-72). In 1872, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George M. Brooks, serving until 1873. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 88.
