MENLO PARK, CALIF.- Private funeral services were held Thursday for Walter R. Landwehr, 79, retired Utah mining official who died Jan. 19 in Menlo Park after a long illness.
Dr. Landwehr retired from American Smelting and Refining in 1957 where he was chief geologist and acting manager of its western mining division. He was responsible for development of lead and zinc properties near Leadcville, Colo., and copper mining near Tucson, Ariz. He moved to Menlo Park from Salt Lake City in 1958.
He was a former director of the United Park City Mines, and Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and also a member of the AIMME, Utah Geological Society, Geological Society of America and the Society of Economic Engineers.
Dr. Landwehr was also a former member of Sigma Chi, University Club, and Alta Club, and a veteran of World War I. He received a degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1922 and a Ph.D. in geology from Stanford in 1933.
Born Nov. 24, 1893, in Boone, Iowa, he was the son of Herman and Johanna Landwehr. He married the former La Reta Waddell in Salt Lake City in 1925. She survives.
