Bernard Jungels immigrated to the United States in 1850. He married Margaret Wagner on 27 Feb 1854 at Saint Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport, Will, Illinois. They had 13 children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood, based on the 1900 federal census. Bernard was naturalized on 6 Oct 1860 in Joliet. His father-in-law was one of the witnesses. (His date of naturalization was the same as two of his neighbors, brothers Jacob and Bernard Hostert.) Bernard died at the age of 84. His funeral took place on 17 Mar 1907.

Ten of his thirteen children include:

(1) Peter, b 1855.
(2) Bernard, b 1856.
(3) Mathias, b 1857.
(4) Josephine, b 1858.
(5) William, b 1860.
(6) Michael, b 1862.
(7) Maria, b 1863.
(8) John, b 1865.
(9) Margaret, b 1867.
(10) Catherine, b 1869.

Please note that some of his sons changed the spelling of the family surname, as evidenced by linked memorials. The first 8 children listed above all survived to adulthood. Margaret and Catherine both died as teenagers.

Sources include Bernard's headstone in Saint Michael Cemetery (originally known as Wagner Cemetery), passenger lists, naturalization records, Saint Dennis Catholic Church vital records, and census records (1860, 1870, 1880, 1900-all Homer), "Where the Trails Cross" 1987, and the Joliet Sunday Herald 17 Mar 1907, as well as numerous records for family members.
