OBITUARY
Augusta C. Protz was born August 27, 1843 at Loth, Province Posen, Germany, and departed this life April 5, 1935, at the home of her son, William, north west of Kouts, at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 9 days.
She was united in marriage to John Gottlieb Gesse of Province Posen, Germany, April 15, 1869. To this union were born three daughters and five sons. A son, Otto J., who died in infancy, and a daughter, Hulda S., who preceded her in death just 36 years to the day, at the age of 18 years, who is "gone but not forgotten."
Surviving to mourn her loss are two daughters, Mrs. Emma W. Ayelea, and Mrs. Augusta C. Sweney, both of Hebron, and four sons, Reinhard, P., who lives on the home place, Herman G. and William A., all of Kouts, and Rudolph J., also of Hebron, 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Gesse with their oldest son Reinhard came to the United States in the Spring of 1871, settling in Chicago. Their home was destroyed by the Chicago fire. In 1874 they came to Indiana and settled on a farm 3 1/2 miles southwest of Kouts, where she has spent the rest of her life, except about three years that she spent with her son William and family. Her husband preceded her in death May 28, 1914.
She has been a loving, patient mother and neighbor and was respected and loved by all who knew her. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran church and had lived patiently waiting to be called by her Savior.
