Moses was born in New Mills Parish, County Tyrone. He was the second son of Thomas Ferris and Catherine Skelton. He married Margaret Barris on 22 May 1860 in Dungannon, County Tyrone. His brother, Thomas Ferris married Mary Jane Barris (Moses' brother married his wife's sister.)
