Crystal Maxine Todd, daughter of Sylvia and Harry Combs, was born Oct 1, 1916, on a farm north of New Market. She departed this life Aug 18, 1966, following an accident at Stockton, Kan, at the age of 49 years, 10 months, and 17 days.

She attended grade school at Glassgow School, north of New Market and graduated from New Market High School in the class of 1933. She worked at Clark's Store in New Market while in school and for a time after graduation.

She was united in marriage to Glenn E. Spring Dec 31, 1937. To this union two children were born, Gary and Joyce. Crystal and Glenn lived on farms near Siam, Hawleyville and New Market. Glenn died July 12, 1960, and Crystal moved to Clarinda, working for some time at Hawley Drug.

On April 5th, 1962 she was united in marriage Ermel Todd of Villisca.

Crystal was a member of the New Market Church of Christ. She was treasurer of the church and could always be counted on to help in Bible school, camp, youth activities, and any other task she was called upon to do.

She was a member of the Valley Sunshine Club during the time she lived in the Frog Valley Community. She also belonged to a rural women's club near Villisca. She was not just a member on a book, but was always faithful in attendance.

She greatly enjoyed working among the flowers that bloomed abundantly in her house and garden. She loved the outdoors and at every opportunity was working among God's growing things. An even greater interest was the concern for others. She delighted in being able to help any relative, neighbor, friend, or down and outer who might pass by. Many have testified to the help and encouragement received from her hands.

She loved her children with a true mother's love and this was extended even more to her grandchildren. Her devotion was unflagging and whenever word was received of sickness her response was instant. Her first query in talking over the phone would be "How are the kids?"

Crystal is survived by her daughter Joyce Elaine Spring of Clarinda, her son Gary Wayne, his wife Loleta and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Glenn, and Melanie Lynne of New Market. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs Sylvia Combs of New Market; a brother, Neal Combs of Gravity and a sister, Mrs Harold (Jean) Hartman of New Market. She also leaves many uncles, aunts, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father in March, 1964.

She was always helpful to her mother. She was a devoted wife and generally when Ermel was seen Crystal would be close by. As a mother she was without peer for her family were the bright lights in her life and her thoughts were never far from them. Both Ermel and Crystal were dearly loved by all who knew them and their passing will leave a great vacancy in the hearts of family and community.
