Death of Mrs. Ellen Bakalyar.
Mrs. Ellen Bakalyar, after a long, busy and useful life died at the home of her son John Bakalyar, of Hunter township, on Friday February 18th, 1910.
It is seldom we are called upon to chronicle the death of a lady who has reached the age of one hundred and four years. It is, in this instance, a long path marked with kindness and cheer, a life that was a blessing and benefaction to all within the sphere of its influence, so is the death of Mrs. Bakalyar an irreparable loss to a large circle of relatives and friends.
Ellen Bakalyar was born near Eperies, Hungary, in 1806. She was married to John Bakalyar in 1842. Two children blessed this union, John, of Lakefield, and Anna, who died at the age of ten. Her husband preceded her to the great beyond in 1876. In the year 1879 she and her only son, John, immigrated to America and for a number of years lived at Streator, Illinois. In 1894 they came to Jackson county and settled in the township of Hunter, where Mrs. Bakalyar continued to make her home until her death. She leaves one son, ten grand children and twenty-two great grand children.
The funeral services were held in the Slovak Luther church, Rev. P.H. Ristan officiating, and the remains were laid at rest in the Slovak cemetery south of Lakefield.
