battles around the Richmond,
Va area.After the fall of
Wilmington in Feb, 1865 several
Wilmington Doctors were hired
by the Federals to work in area
hospitals. Dr Anderson was one
of these.

Admiral Edwin A. Anderson, Jr., who is
buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Admiral Edwin Alexander Anderson, United
States Navy, retired, one of the most
distinguished men from Wilmington, NC.
Was born at Masonboro Sound, July 16,
1860. His Father was Dr. Edwin A.
Anderson, native of Wilmington. His Mother
was Mary(Lillington) Anderson. She was the
daughter of General Alexander Lillington.
On December 22, 1888, Admiral Anderson
married Mertie Mosely Lorain, of Baltimore,
Maryland. Mertie was the daughter of
Major Lorenzo Lorain, United States Army,
graduate of West Point in 1886.
He was at the time the only American
Naval officer who has received Congressional
recognition during three wars--the Spanish-
American, the occupation of Vera Cruz,
where he received the "Medal of Honor,"
and World War I.
He served as Gov. of Island of San Domingo.
Received his education at the Cape Fear
Academy, conducted by Professor Washington
Catlett. Attended the Academy in Wilmington
run by Rev. Daniel Morrell. Honorable
Alfred M. Waddell appointed him to the
United States Naval Academy. He attended
from 1878-1882. During his service he was
placed in Command(June 9, 1898) of the
captured British Steamer Adula and took her
into Savannah, Georgia, where she was
condemned.
He was an Honorary member of the Army and
Navy Club, Washington, and to the Society
of the Cincinnati. He was an honorary
member of the Rotary Club of Wilmington and
the Kiwanis Club of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania;
also an honary member of the Wilmington
Chamber of Commerce and the Carolina
Yacht Club.
Admiral Anderson died September 23, 1933
and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
