Thomas Blacknall Yancey enlisted in the 23rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment some time prior to July 1863. Although Weymouth Jordan's "North Carolina Troops" places him in Company H, several individual records within his Confederate service record list him in Company G. He fought with his regiment at Gettysburg on 1July1863, but was apparently captured at South Mountain, Maryland, on 5 July 1863 during the retreat back to Virginia. He was initially confined as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware, Delaware, before being transferred in October 1863 to Point Lookout, Maryland. He was paroled and exchanged in September 1864, only to be hospitalized for a month.
