Educated at the Jesuit Belvedere College and University College Dublin, he was elected to the Irish Senate in 1965, and the Irish House of Representatives in 1969. From 1973 to 1977, he served as the nation's Minister of Foreign Affairs. His greatest success in office occurred in 1985 as a signatory of the Anglo-Irish accord, paving the way for the peaceful reconciliation with the government of Great Britain. Following his retirement from government service in 1992, he wrote a weekly column for the "Irish Times." He was an avid supporter of the European Union and women serving in the national government. He was the author of his autobiography "All in a Life," which was published in 1991.
