Phylander enlisted Sept. 5, 1861. Mustered out Sept. 20 1864. He was wounded at battle of Fredericksburg Dec. 1862. Wounded in shoulder and received a cracked rib from a minie ball. His unit, the 50th New York Engineers, were putting up pantoon bridges over the river under fire from Confederate sharpshooters. He volunteered to put up the last part and with a group of 9 others rushed down to the river to do it. All were shot down but one. Excerpt taken from 'Bridge Building in Wartime' by Col. "Philander Dunlap enlisted Co. C, 50th Engineers Septemper 5, 1861. He participated in the battles of Yorktown, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill and was wounded at Fredericksburg. He was discharged September 20, 1864."

Philander's parents were John Allen Dunlap & Jane Presley Dunlap. Phylander was the 5th of 7 children.
