Edith Elizabeth "Edie" (Lee) Dickinson

Age 86, of Smyrna, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington, DE with her loving daughter by her side.

Born on January 4, 1925 in North Adams, MA, she was the daughter of the late Monroe and Grace (Fuller) Lee. Edie, as she was affectionately known by many, was a graduate of Drury High School, Class of 1942. On September 30, 1944, she married Wallace H. Dickinson in Williamstown, MA and together they raised four children. In Edie's younger years, she sang on the radio and later taught accordion lessons to many children, including Valerie Bertinelli. She and her husband moved to Delaware in 1950. Edie was retired from Clemente's Bus Center following thirty years of dedicated service as a bookkeeper. Edie enjoyed many hobbies, including reading, with her favorite reading being any Road Atlas, traveling, camping, knitting, playing bingo at the Clayton Senior Center, working on puzzles, which included jigsaw and word search puzzles and playing the piano and organ. She was an avid NASCAR fan with Dale Earnhart Jr. being her favorite driver. Edie was a member of the "Bingo Gang" at the Lillian Smith Senior Citizens Center in Clayton and the DAV Women's Auxiliary in Seaford.

In addition to her parents, Edie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Wallace (1996); a daughter, Betty Ann Markland (2008) and three grandchildren, John Lowell (1995), Linda Davis (2002) and Michelle Foraker (2010). She is survived by her daughter, Donna Lowell (Jim) of New Castle and two sons, Allan Dickinson (Roberta) and Bob Dickinson (Victoria) both of Townsend; a sister, Joyce Boshoff of Albany, GA; a brother-in-law, Carl Dickinson of VT; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Thomas of VT and Eileen Shields of MA; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren with another one expected later this year, 6 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Although Edie was at Heartland Hospice House briefly, their care and support were very much appreciated by her family.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 am on Thursday, June 2 at DANIELS & HUTCHISON FUNERAL HOME LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where friends may visit with her family from 10:30-11:30 am. Interment will follow 1 pm at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. Memorial contributions can be made to the Heartland Hospice House, 5661 Ochletree Lane, Wilmington, DE 19808.
