With the sudden death of Thomas Brookshire on Wednesday, there was removed from our midst one of Santa Barbara's oldest pioneers. He was a native of Iowa and came to this valley more than forty years ago. He was 74 years of age and carried his years well, being in apparent good health until a few hours before his death, which was due to heart failure.
Thomas Brookshire was one of Santa Maria's most familiar characters and his departure marks the removal of one of the valley's landmarks, so to speak. Mr Brookshire figured prominently in the early discovery of oil in this valley, and one of the first, as well as successful companies in this field still bears his name.
A widow, two sons and three sons survive him, being Mrs. A. L. Eames, Mrs. Charles F. French and Mrs. Charles Ball, and Charles and Al. Brookshire. The funeral was held Friday afternoon and was attended by many of his deceased's old time friends and neighbors.

Thomas's mother is Susan Davis Harrow 1822-1853.
