Born Dec. 25, 1911 in Eccles(marriage record), he was the son of Charles W. and Rhoda M. Toney Gunther. He married Lottie Hester Gravely on December 25, 1933. He and Lottie had 5 children. Barbara, Alvah Ray Jr., Rudy, Randall, Richard. A lifelong resident of Raleigh County, he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Navy and served as a custodian of the First Baptist Church of Beckley, where he was a member. Alvah was also a member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Alvah died in a Richmond, Va. hospital following a short illness.
