George W. G. Cook was a native of Pennsylvania, born in Greene county in 1825. he was a son of Richard and Rachel (Garrison) Cook, deceased. His wife's maiden name was Margaret Cochran, and she was a daughter of James and Mary Lantz Cochran, deceased. They were married in Wetzel County, WV, December 5, 1861, the county of her birth which occurred April 23, 1839. Their hearthstone has been blessed with eight children, James deceased, Mary E., Rachel F., Frank P., Martha J., Martin Z. Cook, Jacob I., and Carrie B. Comrad Cook served a short time in the Union army during the late unpleasantness. He had been engaged in farming when he was enrolled from Wheeling, in 1865, as a Private in Co. A, 3rd W. Va. Cavalry. In 1865, he was furloughed for thirty days and returned to duty at expiration of time. Owing to his late enlistment he did not take part in any regular battles and was honorably discharged at Wheeling, W. Va. , in 1865. His brother Irad served in W. Va. V. I. Comrade Cook has been postmaster four years; he is a disabled and retired soldier and is at present residing in Maude, W. Va.
