Husband of Manerva McGee Stepp, married March 31, 1859 in Warren County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John & Martha (Walker) McGee.
Per report "Prisoners who have died at Camp Morton, Ind.", Pvt John A Stepp was captured at Chattanooga, TN on September 10, 1863, when Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Crittenden's troops arrived at Chattanooga. He was transferred to Camp Morton, Indiana and arrived there on October 9th. He died of pneumonia seven weeks later.

Died as a Confederate Prisoner of War at Camp Morton, originally interred at Green Lawn Cemetery (Confederate Section), but reinterred in 1933 in a mass grave of 1616 Confederate POW'S at Crown Hill.
