William H. Gray became the sole support for Eliza Gray after the death of his father Abraham. He enlisted in the 110th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1862. He was a Private and was a teamster in the regiment. He was in the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania C.H., Cold Harbor, Virginia. The regiment was called back to Winchester, VA. in 1864 to protect Washington D.C. from Confederate attack coming from the Shennadoah Valley. He was killed at the 3rd Battle of Winchester(Opequan).

His mother filed for a pension since she relied on William's work and army pay to sustain her and the children. She filed a pension file and included four letters she'd received from William during the war proving his support. These letters are still extant in the file at the National Archives.
