Susan B. Tappen grew up next door (her father's farm adjoined the Thacher farm across the IL-WI state border)to Samuel E. F. Thacher. She and her family traveled by covered wagon to Delphos, KS in 1871 where she grew up and was a school teacher. She and Samuel kept track of each other and married in Concordia, KS in 1886 (their mother's were half-sisters). They came back to the Thacher farm in WI and had five sons. Susan's stories of traveling to KS meeting indians, fighting praire fires, tornados, outlaws, sickness, starvation, etc. inspired her youngest son to write a book chronicling them - "Songs My Mother Sang" by George B. Thacher
