Funeral Services for Joe P. Durham, Sr., 100, of West Monroe, LA will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Parkview Baptist Church, Monroe with Rev. Gabe Krell, Rev. Ray Teal and Judge William Norris, III. officiating. Graveside Services will be at 2:30 PM Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Sardis Cemetery in Winn Parish, LA.
Mr. Durham died Sunday morning after a brief illness.
He is survived by one son, Joe Durham, Jr. of West Monroe, LA; four nieces, Ethel Brown of Montgomery, AL, Jane Irving and her husband Jim of Little Rock, AR, Dot Moore of Tempe, AR, and Betty Jo Shackelford of West Monroe, LA; three nephews, Nate Durham of Houston, TX, Bill Durham and his wife Carol, Charlie Kolb and wife Vicki, both of West Monroe, LA and many other family members and a whole host of friends.
He was born January 28, 1911, the youngest son of Joab and Ardelia Durham in Atlanta in Winn Parish. Mr. Durham is preceded in death by wife of 70 years, Claudia Sheppard Durham, and infant son, and his mother and father. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1927, Louisiana State Normal College in Natchitoches in 1933 and LSU in 1938. Mr. Durham started working for Sykes High School as a teacher and coach in the 1930's, then went to Winnfield. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1941 to begin his lifelong work in the United States Government's Food and Drug Administration.
He was District Director at both the Minneapolis and Dallas Districts. Mr. Durham retired in 1973 in Dallas. He and his wife moved to Pineville in 1989 and then to West Monroe in 1998. In 1972, he was asked by the US Government to go to Mexico to see if he could get them to regulate the produce they imported to us. Before this was done, the imports had no regulations at all and a lot of people became ill from eating the produce. Mr. Durham got them to agree to three proposals about regulations. One included how much DDT to put on their plants. This was a feat which was not acknowledged in the US, but one story was run in the Mexican National Spanish paper.
A member of Parkview Baptist Church for more than a decade, he was a regular attender until recent health issues prevented it. He was a deacon at First Baptist, Pineville for several years. He and his wife loved to travel and he also loved to fish and hunt. He would go to Wyoming with two or three other FDA employees hunting antelope, and was in an earthquake one year, an experience he did not like. In later years, he was content to stay at home reading westerns.
Pallbearers will be Tanner Noel, Ty Noel, Robert Bates, Craig Kolb, Ken Barry, and Glen Stroud.
Honorary Pallbearers will be regular attenders of the Wednesday Morning Coffee Club.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday, May 30, 2011 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe.
