O. B. Tufts, a well known resident of Ilion, died at his home on Otsego Street, Sunday, June 7, after years of failing health. Mr. Tufts was born at Andover, Vermont, September 14, 1843, where the early part of his life was spent. He lived there several years with an uncle on a farm.
At the age of 19 he enlisted in Company C. 16th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. His regiment was organized at Ludlow, Vt., August 20, 1862, and was mustered into the service at Brattleboro, Vt, October 23, 1862. He served until the end of the war after which he came to this village and had since resided here. He was employed at tbe Armory for several years as gunbarrel straightener. He was a master of his trade. In 1885 he left the Armory to engage in the retail shoe business, which he conducted until 1891, when he sold out his interest. In 1893 he opened a grocery store on First Street, which he conducted until last October, when he was obliged to dispose the business on account of failing health. He was twice married.
His first wife was Lovina A. Fairchild. They were married in Ilion on September 5, 1866. They had a son and three daughters. She died in 1881. He was married to his second wife, who was Emma S. Swartz at Utica in 1883. He was at one time a trustee of the village and also an assessor.
He is survived by his wife, and one son, Wesley Owen, of Ilion; three daughters, Mrs. H.P. (Irene) Baum of Clayville, Mrs. Hubbard N. (Ida L.) Josleyn and Miss Iva C. Tufts of Ilion. (Ida and Iva are twins) The Ilion Citizen, Friday, June 12, 1903
