Nathaniel Powers Ellison was the son of Lewis and Margaret Powers Ellison of Laurens, South Carolina. He was the grandson of Revolutionary War soldier Robert and Frances Avant Ellison of Virginia and Laurens County, South Carolina. He was born in Madison County, Alabama and his family moved to Pickens County, Alabama 1830. He married Catherine Hudson September 12, 1836 in Winston County, Mississippi. There they had children William Hudson Ellison 1840, Margaret Ellen Ellison Snow Micenheimer 1841, Susan D. Ellison Roberts 1844,and Ann Eliza (Annliza) Ellison Williams 1846. By 1850 they had moved to Caldwell County, Texas and had daughters Texanna Ellison 1850, Josephine Ellison 1852, Virginia Ellison 1854, Emma G. Ellison Hurt 1856 and son Burrell Reese Ellison 1858.
