Vernon L. “Tubby” Braden, 38, 415 Locust, was found dead early Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center.

Dr. Roman Hiszczyhnskyj, Shawnee County deputy district coroner, said Mr. Braden died of a heart attack.

Mr. Braden was a corrections officer at Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center the past eight years. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and later served in the Army National Guard.

He was born July 27, 1946, at Topeka, the son of Charles Vernon and Betty L. Mullin Braden, and lived in Topeka all his life.

Mr. Braden was a member of Wednesday Morning Bowling League at Meadow Lanes.

He was married to Catherine V. Guffey on May 28, 1983, at Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Dawn Braden, Topeka; two sons, Ryan Christopher Braden and Christopher James Braden, both of Topeka; his mother, Mrs. Betty Braden, Topeka; and three brothers, Ronald Eugene Braden and Thomas Junior Braden, both of Topeka, and William Henry Braden, Soldier, Ky.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Tibbits-Griffin Highland Chapel. Burial will be in Topeka Cemetery. Mr. Braden will lie in state from 8 p.m. today until service time at the chapel.
