Charles "Charlie" Davies was the son of Bertha Bombe and Charles Davies.

Charles was named Charles Davies II, probably to distinguish him from an infant half brother of the same name, who was a Junior. His father was not present in his younger years, and it seems that may have been mostly true of his mother as well. Bertha was a German from Nanticoke in upstate Pennsylvania who later worked in Philadelphia as a head nurse at the downtown Philadelphia YMCA. Apparently Charles II lived there with Bertha for a while, but it's unclear why Bertha did not raise him completely.

His upbringing was greatly aided by the support of his half sister, Virginia. Young Charles attended a military school rather young, about age 6.

Charles II graduated from the Germantown Academy (a very good school) as a history major. He was first married before he was age 21, though it did not last. He spent two years in the Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, doing 22 jumps.

Charles and his second wife met because she had a girlfriend going out with a friend of Charles'. She was invited to come along and meet him. She had a son from before her marriage to Charles II, and Charles adopted him. 11 years later, they had a son together.

Charles tried working in the family prosthetic limb business but found it difficult to work with injured people and do the requisite fittings. Instead, he found his way in sales like his father, but made his professional home in the automotive arena, selling new and used vehicles. In sales, he used the last name of Callahan, saying "People trust Irishmen."

Charles II died at age 47 of a heart attack.

There is another Davies out there, but it is doubtful he'll be found. Before Charles married, he had a son with another lady. The couple heard later on that the child was having a difficult upbringing. Charles was troubled by this and wanted to take over raising the child and his wife was open to this thinking her boy would do well to have a sibling about his age. Unfortunately, they never could find him, knowing only that at one time he and his mother were in Wildwood, NJ. It would be wonderful if he could be found even today, but there is not enough information to find him without knowing the mother's name and not knowing the child's birthdate or last name. He would be about age 50 now, in 2011, and his name may also be Charles.

Charlie is recalled as "funny, a great salesman, smart" and as a sensitive person. He had a difficult life, but the core of him was a fine man.

Charles' exact death date is not known presently. The Social Security Death Index fixes it as August of 1978, while cemetery records show his interment as taking place on August 24, 1978.

UPDATE, March 2012: The "missing Davies" has been found! His wife read this very memorial. Wishing him and his family the very best as they connect with new family.
