James S. Hayes served three years in the Union Army. He enlisted August 15, 1862, at Jacksonville, Illinois, as a Private in CO. H., 101ST REGT. of the Illinois Infantry. He mustered out June 7, 1865, as a Corporal. He and his wife Sarah (Barker) had children who included Marguerite "Maggie" M., John Barker, Bertha, Florence, James, Ralph, and Paul Wayne Hayes.

“James Hayes passed away at his home in Memory, Monday. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, on Thursday afternoon. He had been afflicted with paralysis for many years.”

Another old settler, who for more than thirty-five years has been a resident of the New Market vicinity passed to his reward in the death on March 19th of J.E. Hayes.

Mr Hayes was a civil war veteran being 80 years, five months and fourteen days of age at time of death. He is survived by his wife and six children.
