Gilbert Cothern, 66, of Alma, died Saturday night (July 9, 2005) at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of Coffee County but had lived in Alma most of his life. He was the son of the late James Alvin Cothern and was also preceded in death by a brother, Hubert Cothern. He was employed with Satilla R.E.M.C. for 45 years and was manager of operations and construction when he retired in 2002. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as song leader and a deacon for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Wade Cothern of Alma; two sons, Andy Cothern (Wife Vicki) of Alma and Stacy Cothern (wife Teesa) of Alma; one daughter, DeAnn Flanders(husband David Pee Wee) of Alma; two brothers, David Cothern of Baxley and Don Cothern of Alma; five sisters; Florence Nall, Madgaline Sears, Nadine Crosby, Martha Wade and Dorothy Raulerson, all of Alma; four grandchildren, Blake Martin of Fernandina Beach, Berry Martin, Chase and Cassie Cothern, all of Alma.

A funeral will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 at Friendship Baptist Church with Brother Vernon Dorminey, Brother Kenneth Cox and Dr. Norman Sweeting officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be carried to the church at 10 a.m. to lie in state. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 9. Active pallbearers will be Bert, Ned and Brent Cothern, Wayne Nall, Chad, Scotty and Ted Wade and Ronnie Crowder. Honorary escort will be Employee's past and present of Satilla R.E.M.C., the class 1957 and all others in attendance.
