NELS J. ALRICK

Dodge County Recorder 25/Mar/1926

NELS J. ALRICK, FORMER KASSON MAN, DEAD
----------------------------------------
Worked For J. Frank Sims In General Store Here Thirty Years Ago
----------------------------------------

Nels J. Alrick, who learned the mercantile business while employed as a clerk in the general store of J. Frank Sims here, 30 years ago, passed away at Hayfield on March 15th, where he has conducted a general store of his own for a number of years.

The funeral service was conducted in that village on Friday and was attended by the entire populace of that village and the surrounding countryside. Among friends and relatives from this village who went to pay their last respects to deceased were: L. A. Anderson and family, D. W. Brewer and family, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Folkestad, Levi Folkestad, Mr. and Mrs. Carl S. Boyum, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Boyum, Mrs. Kenneth Boyum, Mrs. O. A. Molde, Odena and Ottmar Molde and Andr. S. Berge.

The following facts relative to Mr. Alricks life we glean from the Hayfield Herald:
N. J. Alrick, one of Hayfield's most highly respected and prominent business men, passed away at his home in this village Monday evening, March 15th, 1926, at 12 oclock, aged 60 years and three months. He was born in Sogn, Norway, Dec. 10th, 1865, and came to America with his parents, Johan and Mary Alrick, in 1872. The family came at once to Dodge county, settling in Vernon township.

He was married June 19th, 1898, to Miss Anna Molde, who with one son, Raymond, survives him. Two brothers, Johan, of Milaca, and Joen of McIntosh, and three sisters, Mrs. John Vaatvedt, of McIntosh; Mrs. Gertie Orning, of Minneapolis, and Miss Minnie Alrick, living at home, also survive him. Mrs. Vaatvedt is ill at her home and could not come down for the funeral.

N. J. Alrick has been identified with Hayfield business circles for many years, he and Fred Orning (deceased) having bought out the G. G. Dalen general store which they operated for some time. Later Mr. Dalen bought out the interests of Mr. Orning and was associated with Mr. Alrick for a period of eight years. At the end of this time Mr. Alrick bought out Mr. Dalen, and has continued to conduct the business at the same location ever since. The cyclone of June 13th, last year, wrecked his store building and only last fall he completed a new modern building for the housing of his business.

Late in December of 1924 Mr. Alrick was taken suddenly ill and was taken to a Minneapolis hospital for an operation. His health seemed to be improving, and during the past year he was able to attend to his business affairs. In January of this year he suffered a relapse and was again taken to the hospital at Minneapolis, returning to Hayfield Jan. 29th. Since that time he had continued to fail, and on Tuesday of last week he was taken to Rochester to consult with the Mrs. Mayo. On his return home, he at once took to his bed, and passed away on Monday evening.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity church Friday afternoon at two oclock, with Rev. B. A. Johnson officiating.

As a mark of respect, all Hayfield business places will be closed during the funeral. In the passing of Nels Alrick, this community loses one of its oldest and most prominent business men. He was a man of the strictest integrity, who during his long and successful merchandising career in this village had endeared himself to a large number of friends. He was at all times kindly, considerate, courteous and tolerant of the views of others. He was a loving husband and a kind and indulgent father, and his home life was ideal. Nels Alrick was held in high esteem by his business associates, being ever ready to lend assistance and to work for the welfare of his home community. His place will, indeed, be hard to fill.
