Officer William "Bill" Abel was an officer with the Saint Louis Police Metropolitan Police Department, having served in the 5th, 7th, and 9th Districts. Bill was also a detective in the Vice Division. Bill was a 2nd generation police officer with the department, as his father had also served with the same agency. It should be noted that Bill's son, Sergeant Anthony Abel, is a 3rd generation police officer and recently retired from the St. Louis Police Department.

Bill was also in the United States Air Force Reserve and was an accomplished pilot, attaining the rank of Captain (aircraft commander) while flying the C-130 Hercules.

Bill was highly respected among his peers and was well thought of.

P.O. William Abel left behind a son, Tony, and a daughter, Karen, to mourn his passing.

A memorial service was held at the Hillcrest Abbey to a standing room only crowd. The Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Honor Guard Unit was in attendance, along with many upper rank and file of the department.
