Obituary of Sarah H (Atkinson) Greer

The Zumbro Falls Enterprise prints the following in regard to the death of Mrs. Moses Greer, who was known well here:
The community was shocked to learn last Friday morning that Mrs. Moses Greer had died suddenly the night before. She had suffered a month previously from an acute, but temporary illness, from which she had not completely recovered, but which did not prevent her attending upon her usual duties about the home, and which was not thought to be serious by the family. To the public it was unknown, and accordingly her death was totally unexpected. Thursday evening, after a day spent in the ordinary way, she retired to bed about nine-o'clock, seemingly in her usual health and spirit. Very soon after she was seized by an attack of the same symptoms which she had experienced a month before, and almost immediately expired.

The funeral was held at the Congressional church on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a congregation much beyond the capacity of the building to accommodate, many being compelled to remain outside. Numbers were present from neighboring towns. Burial took place in the cemetery to the north of town.

Mrs. Greer's maiden name was Sarah Atkinson, and she was a daughter of the late John Atkinson, one of the best known and best respected of the early settlers of this region. She was born in Illinois February 17, 1855. The following year her parents came to Minnesota, then a wilderness, settling on a pioneer farm in Olmsted county, where they lived for several years. Later the family moved to the farm east of Zumbro Falls, where they will be remembered by all the grown up members of the community.

On March 21, 1881, the deceased was married to Moses Greer, and ever proved a most worthy helpmate in building up the comfortable home and the competence with which their industry and foresight have been rewarded. Ten children were born to them, of whom nine survive, all of them being present at their mother's funeral. Sadie Dosdall, the oldest daughter, lives at Hancock, Minn., and Thomas at Cleveland, N. D. The others are residents of this neighborhood. William died in 1904. Of the four surviving members of her father's family, two sisters, Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Furlney of Rochester, were present at the funeral.

Born of religious parents, Mrs. Greer shared their faith and was a woman of steadfast Christian character, held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. The family have the sincere sympathy of all in their sudden and deep bereavement.
