He was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Divernon, Ill., son of Richard and Gertrude (Owen) Coles.
He married the former Margaret Boyd on May 2, 1982, who survives.
Other survivors include his daughter, Teresa Sue Coles of St. Charles, Mo.; two sons, Michael Francis Coles of Columbia, Mo., and Timothy Edward Coles of Labadie, Mo. He is also survived by a beloved stepdaughter, Susan Ann Meisenheimer of Godfrey; a stepson, Jerry Boyd and his wife, Dana, of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Dolores "Babe" Cummings of Godfrey; 13 nieces and nephews; as well as many great-nieces and -nephews; a brother-in-law, Wood Waters of Alton; and a sister-in-law, Ginny Coles of Brighton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bernadette "Bernie" Waters and Darlene "Doll" Carroll; and one brother, George Coles.
A member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, he was a graduate of St. Patrick's Grade School and Marquette Catholic High School in Alton. He attended St. Louis University and graduated summa cum laude. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army serving, in World War II. He founded, owned and operated Lawrence F. Coles CPA in Alton until his retirement in 1982. An avid golfer, he was an original member of Lockhaven Country Club in Godfrey. He was a supporter of the golf teams at Marquette Catholic High School in Alton.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elias-Smith Funeral Homes and Crematory in Godfrey.
Military rites will be conducted by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308 at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will be the celebrant.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Godfrey with Deacon William Kessler officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
