Lt. Col. (Ret.) William Joseph Shannon, 81, of Savannah, husband of Sietske Linnartz Shannon, died Friday evening, Sept. 13, at Candler Hospital.
Born Oct. 19, 1920, in Flat Bush, Brooklyn, NY, he was a son of the late Joseph Shannon and Mary Fitzpatrick Shannon. Lt. Col. Shannon lived a long and wonderful life serving his family and country. Joining the Army at the outbreak of World War II, Lieutenant Shannon fought with the the U.S. Army across North Africa, into Sicily where he was severely wounded for the first time in his 32 years of military Service. Convalescing in France, Bill, as everyone called him, met Sietske, his devoted wife of 56 years. Lt. Col. Shannon went on to serve in the Korean War and Vietnam. For his long career and devotion to duty, Lt. Col. Shannon was awarded the "Legion of Merit". Retiring from the military in Bremehaven, Germany in 1974, Lt. Col. Shannon moved his family to Savannah to accept the position of Deputy Port Manager for United States Shipping Lines. Now a civilian, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Shannon remained active in The Retired Officers Association, TROA, and the Military Officers of World , MOWW. Being Irish Catholic, Bill stayed active at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church until his most recent illness.
Survivors: his wife, Sietske Linnartz Shannon of Savannah; three sons, Dennis J. Shannon of Sarasota, FL, Terrence A. Shannon of Covington, and William B. Shannon of Bulloch County; one daughter, Louise M. Shannon-Martin of Wilmington Island; three sisters, Joan Rose of Texarkana, TX, Mary Corey of Bethesda, MD, and Patricia Dent of Longview, TX; one brother, Donald Shannon of Donnellon, FL; ten grandchildren and 18 nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5 until 7 o'clock Tuesday at Sipple Mortuary with the Vigil being held at 7 o'clock.
Funeral Mass: 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church conducted by The Reverend Jeremiah J. McCarthy.
Burial: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
