Joseph was a reporter for the "Daily Illinois State Register" when he was 19. He married May Mather in 1897 and their children were Joseph (1899-1961), Arthur Mather (1901-2001), and Thomas Hitchcock (1910-1961). Joseph was working as a jeweler and watch maker in 1918 in San Antonio, TX and that same year married Pauline Everitt. They had one son, Jesse (1923-1980).
