Reuben Hitt's family left Virginia when he was 4 years old to move to Laurens County, South Carolina in 1785. He first married Martha, a daughter of Robert Hamilton whose will (Box 32, Bundle 15, Laurens Co., SC.) named his sons-in-law Reuben Hitt and Robert Holingsworth executors of his estate. Martha died before this estate was settled in 1816, and Reuben received her share. He later married his cousin Nancy Hitt.
One reference says Henry's first wife was named Loraine and that they had 3 sons, viz.: John Henry Hitt, Charles Everett Hitt and Donald Hitt. (Source not stated.)
He married 9/19/1872 in Choctaw Co., Mississippi, to Talitha Jane Swindoll (1852-1905), daughter of J.T. Swindoll.
The 1880 and 1900 censuses show Henry and Jane T. Hitt as parents of the following:
William Lee Hitt (June 9, 1873-November 28, 1906)
Reuben George Hitt (born Sept. 16, 1875)
James H. Hitt born Aug. 1880
Simeon F. Hitt born June 1883
Henry born May 1887 (John Henry?)
Cooper D. Hitt born Feb. 1890 (Donald?)
Alma J. Hitt born Dec. 1895
One researcher lists additional children of Henry and Jane as Arnold Durward Hitt (Dec. 5, 1895 -Dec 1985) and Mortie, though neither of these is shown living with Henry and Jane in the 1900 census nor with Henry and Docia in the 1910 census, though Alma is shown in both. Arnold was the son of William Lee Hitt and his wife Ida (Talley).
Arnold married Nona Elizabeth Embry, had three children, and died at Eupora, Mississippi.
Henry Hitt married in 1908 Theodocia "Docia" Carolina (Stewart) Wier, widow of Robert Frank Wier, son of James and Elizabeth Jane (Pruet) Wier, grandson of James and Mary (Hamilton) Wier. Henry Hitt and Docia Stewart Wier
had one son, J.B. Hitt, who married Lorene and had a son, John Henry Hitt, 31 Aug 1929-6 Feb 2010, of Cleveland, Bolivar Co., MS.(who married Ollie Mae Murphy).
