During World War II, Rae was a pilot and instructor at Hicks Field and flew B-24 Liberators over "the hump" from India to China. Following the war, he married the former Jeanne Thompson. The couple had three sons.

In the early 1950s, he founded Rae Gantt Sound Equipment Co. in Fort Worth. As the regional distributor for RCA, Rae pioneered commercial sound installations in airports, hotels, churches and convention centers around the world. Over the years he was involved in high-profile installations, from the original Amon Carter Airport to installations in Puerto Rico, Columbia and Saudi Arabia. Gantt also expanded the family homestead in East Texas to over 1,000 acres, where he raised cattle for many years.

An active member of the community, Rae served on many civic boards, including the March of Dimes and the Tarrant County Convention Center. He served as president of the Fort Worth Sales Executives Club and the Southwestern Sales Executive Council.
