Robert, son of James Guthrie (1703-1778) of Edinborough, Midlothian, Scotland, was the first Guthrie to move to Pennsylvania in 1793. but between that date and the year 1800 moved to Harrison County, Ohio, settling about eight miles south of Cadiz. The distance travelled from Pennsylvania to Ohio was about seventy-five miles. Robert and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Caldwell Guthrie both died in 1814. They married in Pennsylvania May 4, 1778.

Robert Guthrie married Jane Elizabeth Caldwell - and she is also buried in this cemetery, but has no stone any longer. Robert is the father of my other direct ancestor, William Guthrie, of Richland County, Ohio. Many people claim that Robert's parents were: James Guthrie & "Miss" Bussell. I have NEVER believed this ! The circumstantial evidence for these parents is absolutely WEAK and doesn't make sense. But my book that will be published in 2012 will go over this, point by point. (I petitioned the Graves Registry to get Robert Guthrie a new headstone, as he and his wife, Jane Caldwell's tombstones had long disappeared over the years. They rewarded Robert a new tombstone, along with three others who fought in the Revolutionary War in this graveyard with new headstones about 10-years ago as a result !)
