May was born on February 6, 1917. She lived her entire life in Portland and loved the city. Her father and mother, Nathan Director and Anna Director, were in the retail and wholesale clothing business and active in the Portland Jewish Community. Her parents were immigrants from Russia. May was the second of three daughters; her sisters were Estelle (Sholkoff) and Zelda (Zeidman). May attended Failing grade school, Lincoln High School and Reed College (where she graduated in 1937 at the age of 20). Upon graduation, she married Norman Berenson with whom she had a wonderful marriage and five children: Harvey, Jaye (Janet), Jeffrey, James and Ronald. May was active in the community: Hadassah, Congregation Beth Israel, a member of the Board of United Way, PTA and schools and OMSI, to name only some of her activities. Her husband Norman died unexpectedly in early 1965. Although she was widowed at a young age with three children at home, May threw herself into being both parents to her children. In 1970, while serving on the Beth Israel Board, she and her Board president found that they had more than religious interests in common. May and Tom Georges were married in August, 1970 and spent 33 happy years together. May and Tommy enjoyed traveling, golf, the beach, the MAC club (May loved to swim-at 5:30AM) and an active social life. May also was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren: Alex, David, Daniel, Julia, Elana, Shira, Yael, Gabriel and Ariana Berenson. Shortly before she died, her first great grandchild, Tobias Berenson, was born. She took her children and grandchildren on great trips. She skied with them long after all other women her age had retired to the lodge. The extended family spent a number of years at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. On her 80th birthday, she took the entire family to Hawaii, where she snorkeled with all of them. May continued to be an active member of the community. She was always creative and loved the arts; she made her own jewelry. She became the president of the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts. Under her leadership, the school built a new facility in Southwest Portland. She was active in the Jewish Federation and the American Jewish Committee. Tommy died in early 2004. May was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and, after his death, the disease slowly overwhelmed her. On Friday, May 20, 2011, her body finally gave out and she died. We will miss her very much.
