Conard "Connie" L. Middendorf, age 68 of Freeport, died on Sunday, May 25, 2003 at the Melrose Area Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. will officiate with interment following at St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church in Freeport. Golden Years Senior Citizens will pray at 4 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Connie Middendorf was born on May 1, 1935 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Loretta (Toenyan) Middendorf. He was united in marriage to Ethel A. Herzog on August 2, 1956 in St. Rosa. The couple farmed near the Little Sauk area where he hauled milk for Little Sauk Creamery. The couple then moved and farmed near the Melrose area. During that time, Connie hauled chickens and turkeys for Litchfield Produce and was a member of the Sauk River Watershed District for 8 years. The couple retired from farming and moved to Freeport in 2000. Connie continued helping his sons on the family farm. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gambling, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren. Connie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Middendorf of Freeport; children, Jeffrey Middendorf and his wife, Jackie of Grey Eagle, Daniel Middendorf and his wife, Penny of Upsala, JoAnn Voller and her husband, David of Upsala, Dennis Middendorf of Melrose, Glen Middendorf of Melrose, and Diane Herzog and her husband, Allen of Upsala; 15 grandchildren; mother, Loretta Middendorf-Gieske of Melrose; brothers and sisters, Mary Ann Butkowski and her husband, Jerome of Melrose, Viola Meyer of Freeport, Wilfred Middendorf and his wife, Dorothy of Melrose, Eddie Middendorf and his wife, Vickie of Melrose, Arlene Arnzen and her husband, Gerald of St. Rosa, Lawrence Middendorf and his wife, Joyce of Melrose, Kathy Thomes and her husband, Kenny of Melrose, Harriet Froelich of Melrose, David Middendorf and his wife, Jan of Melrose; and many step brothers and sisters.

Connie was preceded in death by his father, Henry Middendorf; step-father, Joseph Gieske; daughter, Judy Middendorf in November of 1975; and brother, Walter Middendorf.

Serving as casket bearers will be Eric Middendorf, Timmy Voller, Devin Voller, Travis Middendorf, Brandon Voller, Brent Herzog, Trevor Middendorf, John Middendorf, Jodi Middendorf, Miranda Voller, Tracy Herzog, Sara Herzog, Matthew Herzog and Nicholas Herzog. Serving as cross bearer will be Marie Middendorf. Honorary bearers will be the Card Playing Group.
